Proposal

Following the recent articles in the press about the future of bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP; CAS: 117-81-7), DEZA regards it as appropriate to clarify its position for this general purpose plasticizer.

It is important to recall that DEZA has a long lasting and successful history in manufacturing and marketing DEHP. Today, DEZA is one of the leading European producers of DEHP, thanks to a sound feedstock basis, competitive process technology, strong customer orientation, and a professional and flexible organization. Manufacturing capabilities in two sites guarantee a high degree of supply security.

DEZA recognizes that the market potential for DEHP decreased significantly in Europe during the last decade and that DEHP has been classified after risk assessment by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) as a product that might pose a risk to reproduction (Category 2, R 60-61). As a result, DEHP has been listed by REACH in Annex XIV, requiring special authorization for selected uses. DEZA, as a market leader for DEHP, is one of the members of the REACH-DEHP ATF consortium, and has submitted all mandatory documents to ECHA during August 2013. It is expected that the results will be available around mid 2015.

Despite all of this, DEZA remains fully committed to producing and marketing DEHP as long as:
- The European legislation permits the manufacture, transport and use of DEHP in authorized applications.
- Current and future customers value DEHP in their portfolio.
- Economics support the making and selling of DEHP.

It will be critical for DEZA and its customers to stay in close contact about this subject in order to be able to respond in a fast and responsive manner to any market changes.
It should also be highlighted that DEZA has built and is continuously strengthening its position in the field of higher molecular general purpose plasticizers, namely phthalates like di-''isononyl''phthalate (DINP; CAS: 28553-12-0) and bis(2-propylheptyl)phthalate (DPHP CAS: 53306-54-0), consistent with market requirements.
This enrichment is further proof of DEZA's commitment towards the strategic goal of satisfying the needs of the plasticizer users, now and in the future.

Did you know that...

  • Phthalic anhydride is produced by oxidising naphthalene.
  • Phthalic anhydride is used in the production of colouring agents, resin and phthalate softeners for PVC.
  • New REACH chemical legislation re-evaluates the properties of phthalates, particularly dibutyl phthalates and dioctyl phthalates (DEHP) and evaluates their use in selected applications.
